Speed up KUbuntu 10.04 LTS – disable virtuoso-t / strigi / nepomuk

This is a short piece of advice or a hint rather than a real blog posting since I won’t explain any details about any programs referenced here (which in the first hand relates to my absolute lack of knowledge about them). After upgrading from Kubuntu 8.04 LTS to 10.04 LTS – which involved upgrading KDE from 3.5.sth to 4.4.2 – my computer got incredibly slow. I must admit, that by ‘computer’ I mean my somewhat old AMD Sempron 2300+ (single core) with around 1.5Gig of RAM.

I finally realised, that some processes like nepomuk and virtuoso-t frequently occupied my CPU in a way that my computer was no longer usable (for the past two weeks, I only used it as a network-enabled, file- and print-serving heating device).

What worked for me was completely disabling these features – I’m rather sure, I won’t need them. In the ‘Extended’ tab in KDE’s ‘System Settings’ you’ll find sth. like ‘Desktop Search’ (I’m sorry for incorrect terms or names – I’m using the German UI). I disabled everything in the appearing dialogue including all folders. Clicking on ‘Apply’ took quite some time – seems like something happened.

Eventually, I can use my computer again. Average CPU load decreased form around 98% to 3%.

You probably want to try keeping virtuoso-t and nepomuk enabled. They allow for sharing of data like contact information, file tags, etc.. between apps. The big killer to performance seems to be Strigi, as it continuously reindexes the file system.

Thanks for the hint. Might be worth a try.

Yeah – you’re right. I deactivate it and it was fine. I don’t need this feature. I work with filenames; and search for filenames, nothing else.

I noticed this as well on kde 4.4.x (thankfully the issue seems to have been fixed on kde 4.5 RC and I can actually use strigi without the bottle neck in preformance)

@Paul nepomuk/virtuoso-t are not required for contact/any PIM data (thats akonadi’s job … yet another source of headache for some users). But you are right the performance hit is with the indexing of the files in strigi disabling that should be enough if you are experiencing problems.

On a slightly related issue, you might want to consider disabling the nepomuk plugin from krunner if you experience that randomly freezing (as well as another unneeded plugins) but I am glad to say that that issue seems to have also disappeared with kde 4.5 RC

    Nepomuk indexing framework completely SUCKS.
After hours and hours of harvesting on my poor notebook it creates a 3.4Gb database of pure craps.
It doesn’t find anything useful when I query it with dolphin or krunner. NEVER.
Every time I logout and login it will rechecks my hole home to check if files are changed.
And again, from times to times it will forget all the data and start reindex again everything.

It really really really SUCKS. They are trying to add semantic desktop since 4 years now and it is a complete failure.

Hope the soon give up this crazy thing.
